include an introduction to these beautiful horses of Spain explaining
about the breed and of course record the story of our charismatic
Piyayo foundation stallion for the stud. The site was primarily
established to put right the stories that have flown around since his
sad death and as he had a long and full 20+year life with many
adventures his story is a long one which I intend to continue to write
up.
As before the site is also home to the offspring Piyayo has
left behind and the continued breeding of his line through his grandson
Epona Balthazar (Tzar) and thus his abilities and personality continue
to re-appear in the magnificent Epona lines that continue in honour of
him. Our Goals:
From the outset, over 25 years ago, this stud set out as a pleasurable hobby to breed and support the production and use of Hispano-Arabe (Ha') horses in Great Britain as a versatile and self sufficient breed in its own right.
At that time with the recent recognition of these horses and setting up of a foundation stud book in Spain, Piyayo was the only original Hispano-Arabe stallion in this country and our gene poole for these horses was going to come from first generation permissible crossing of Pure Spanish Horses (PRE) and Arabians.
Other studs breeding PRE and Arabians have over that time produced very good Hispano-Arabe stock, but sadly, with the exception of one or two, failed to then continue those lines to establish second and third generation stock that would 'fix' the breed and provide this country with its own self sufficient blood stock. On the whole the majority of Hispano-Arabe (Ha') horses in this country today are still first generation cross PRE to Arabe not Ha' to Ha'. As there are less than 100 Hispano-Arabe horses in this country it is also very much a rare breed.
The Epona Hispano-Arabe Stud has over that time steadily continued to produce Hispano-Arabe stock adding in new PRE or Arabian blood by necessity due to the initial lack of Ha' mares for Piyayo and subsequently due to the unbalanced percentage ration of PRE:Arab in the continuing stock.
Mission: Now
as our third generation from Piyayo is coming into existence this stud
is producing Hispano-Arabe horses that are 50:50 and our hope is that
they in the future will be bred to the 50:50 Ha' that have like them followed down from studs breeding for the continuity of these horses and not just breeding a one off cross.
As a breed in their own right these are wonderful horses to work with and ride in any equestrian sport, they are also just like the PRE prepotent in breeding with other horse breeds to produce outstanding partbreds.
